Two Birds with Number One Stone

It must be a trend! Sinks and toilet/urinals all in one.
The toilet, designed by Buratti + Battiston Architects for Roca, is called the W+W - Washbasin + Watercloset. It touts to save water and space by filtering the used basin water for flushing in the toilet all in one L shaped unit.
The conceptual urinal was designed by Yeongwoo Kim and was a winning entry in iF Concept Design 2010. The Eco Urinal removes the flushing aspect by draining the sink into the same place you just peed. Of course this design assumes men are actually washing their hands after they use the facilities. Sadly, not a guarantee.

The Perfect Pen/cil! Or maybe not...

Most Designers, Artists, Architects love a good Sharpie! Whether it be the fat dark ones to do some heavy handed sketching or the new pens for a smooth note writing experience. Now they've developed - or sort of redeveloped - the erasable pen. Or maybe it's a permanent pencil! This schizophrenic writing apparatus goes on smooth with a wet ink, can be erased like a pencil, but then dries "permanent" in 3 days time. So they claim.
It feels a bit strange when you try to figure out why you might want that, but a little easier to think of it replacing either your pen or your pencil. For the pencil, your leads won't break or wear down; no more clicking or twisting. And you are still able to erase and fix and rewrite whatever you want - as long as you don't change your mind after 3 days of course. For the pen, no more white out, the permanence and elegance of pen that you can erase and clean up - as long as you don't let anyone see it for 3 days.
So really, this pen/cil is the editing, stewing, sleep-on-it time we should be taking before pressing send on that email. You have 3 days to decide if that's really what you wanted to say. Or do you?...
The guys at Engadget did an experiment and they were still able to erase after a week. So they followed up with Sharpie and got a twisted answer that said that yes it will always be erasable but the shadows and marks left behind after 24 hours meets the ISO standards for a "permanent" pen.
It's so sad when a trusted institute like Sharpie lies to it's loyal followers. But at least it can be a pretty cool pencil.

Tensile Fabric

Jens Meyer is a German artist who specializes in tensile fabric sculptures and installations. The pieces usually consist of steel, cables, and a fabric created by Gore (think GoreTex.) The Gore Tenara is an architectural fabric that is UV "immune" and stain resistant claiming that white will stay white even after long sun exposure.
Jens' website shows plenty of photos of sculptures, installations and even photos of him installing pieces. My favorite being the photo of the scruffy installers with fabric in the dirt and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. Luckily the fabric has great fire resistant qualities too!

YEKPARE

I realize my very first POW is not even a product, but I saw this and found it fascinating.
Yekpare Urbanscreening Projection Mapping was a public performance in Istanbul. The screening lasted only 3 days but was a massive collection of images and animations projected onto the Haydarpaşa Train Station and told the 8500 year story of Istanbul. People could watch from along the coast or from boats in the water.
You can view the video on Vimeo here. The video is long - 16 min. - so those of you at work should wait for lunch! It is a bit slow moving but if you can just imagine being there and watching this fantastic show from a boat, it is well worth it. Some of the imagery is beyond me - I'm sure if I were more familiar with Istanbul's history it may make sense. Muscle through the oil/water droplet part because the next part is pretty cool.
The production was created by DenizKader and Candaş Şişman.

Welcome...

to Product Of the Week! A couple of years ago, I started sending out POW emails to my coworkers. As people came and went or emails were shared I got a few followers outside of work. Recently I decided to turn it into a blog in order to 1. reach more people and 2. create an archive of the items.
I generally try to do them on Fridays and the items are usually products though sometimes they are projects or concepts or anything that I find worth sharing. If you find anything you think would make a good POW, you are welcome to send it to me and I will try to get it posted.
I will also be trying to back log past POWs on this blog so you can browse or research or maybe laugh at what I thought was cool two years ago.
Enjoy!
